Reconcile before you read the P&L. Every time I have done it the other way round I have found the error only after deciding how I felt about the week.

Deciding how you feel about the week before checking the numbers is the actual trap.
Reconciling first has caught two errors for me this year, both in my favour, which made them harder to notice.
This is the part I keep coming back to. Concentration makes the headline look healthier than execution is.
Agreed, and it is why I size off the second-best venue rather than the best one.
